Blood Pressure Monitoring

Each person will have different needs with blood pressure monitoring. Your doctor should be able to assist you with how often to measure and give you some guidance about when you need to see your nurse or doctor, depending on your readings.

The following could be used as a general guide for monitoring high blood pressure.

  • When you first start to use the machine take readings morning and evening for a week or two. This will give you and your doctor an idea of the pattern of your blood pressure.
  • Once your blood pressure is being treated and it is reasonably well controlled, drop down to taking a measurement once a day or less. Measure at about the same time each day, for example many people measure before breakfast or before an evening meal.
  • Do not do a large number of readings every day. They will not tell you or your doctor anything more and they may well make you more anxious.

Measuring blood pressure
  • Rest for 3 to 5 minutes before measuring your blood pressure. Do not talk.
  • Sit in a comfortable position, with your legs and ankles uncrossed and your back supported.
  • Place your arm, raised to the level of your heart, on a table or a desk, and sit still.
  • Wrap the correctly sized cuff smoothly and snugly around the upper part of your bare arm.
The cuff should fit snugly, but there should be enough room for you to slip one fingertip under the cuff.
  • Be certain that the bottom edge of the cuff is 1 inch above the crease of your elbow.
  • If using a wrist monitor, the monitor must be at the level of the heart when the reading is taken.
